CSOs' Consultation on the Year of Peace and Security in Africa

On 31st August 2009, on the occasion of the Special Session on the Consideration and Resolution of Conflicts in Africa, the Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), meeting in Tripoli, Libya, have adopted a strong declaration and a comprehensive plan of action on the elimination of conflicts in Africa and the promotion of sustainable peace’.  The Assembly has also declared the year 2010 to be the ‘’Year of Peace and Security on the continent’’ and expressly called on the African civil society to continue to play its role in promoting peace, security and stability as partners of Governments and the AU.

Taking up this call, CCP-AU along with its partners had a Consultation on 20-21 January 2010 on the Year of Peace and Security. As such, please find below documents and outcomes of the consultation:

Hand Guide: ’Strengthening Popular Participation in the African Union: A Guide to AU Structures and Processes’’

In the framework of the upcoming 14th Ordinary Summit of the African Union, Oxfam International and its partner Afrimap have launched a Hand Guide on the African Union’s structures and processes.

The 70-page Hand Guide written both in English and French entitled ‘’Strengthening Popular Participation in the African Union: A Guide to AU Structures and Processes’’ is a practical tool aiming to assist citizens and organizations to engage with African Union policies and programmes. It describes the AU decision-making process and outlines the roles and responsibilities of the AU institutions. It also contains a sampling of the experiences of several non-governmental organizations that have interacted with the African Union in the past.
